If your MP3 player hooks up to the computer via a USB port, I recommend you check if that port works in the first place. i.e hook a mouse or a keyboard, or any other USB product, into that same USB port and check if the port is functioning... If it isn't... then there you go... that's the root of the problem.. If however, the USB port is working with other accessories (mouse, printer, keyboard etc...) but not with your MP3 player.. than I recommend you re-install the software that came along with your MP3 player ( usually on a CD.. ) reinstall it and try again... If that doesnt work... you might have to download a new driver for your Operating system. To be able to download that new driver you will need to viist the site of your MP3 Player provider (i.e. sony.com) and search the downloadable drivers for the different Operating systems.
If that doesnt solve your problem... I don't know what will.

You may need to download some software in order to run a program for your mp3 player. Make sure that you're using the right USB cord and that it's plugged in right. Try turning the mp3 player on when you plug it in.

I had that same problem with my smartphone. First do what kmanevil recommends. If that still doesn't help, install windows media player 11. That was the only thing that worked for me. But you need everything else kmanevil recommends for it to work.
