Many if not most school buses do have cameras on them. Usually there is a sign announcing the camera, to encourage students not to misbehave.

The camera usually records on a standard 6-hour video tape. After the tape is filled up, it is rewound and recorded over. Therefore buses should always have the last six hours of driving time on tape. Most systems also include data such as the bus's speed, what lights are on, what gear the bus is in, and sometimes the temperature.

Some cameras record on a hard-drive or similar system. These cameras may have a lot more time on them, I've heard up to 100 hours.

The driver is often unable to access the camera's tape or hard-drive, since many are locked, and can only be retrieved by the administrator or mechanic.

Also, the camera is unreliable. Many tapes will misfeed and stop recording. This is happening less frequently at our bus garage, but it still happens. So it's not guaranteed that any particular incident will be caught on tape.

Some do. Not all. It's easy to tell. There's usually a big metal box up in the front with a glass screen on it. Usually high up and pointed down so it can see the whole bus.
