It's my understanding that Romania is where Gypsies come from originally.
Does that help you understand the description of it?

I am from Romania as well and fully agree with "Tess" and "Cristian Mocanu". You can find "DIRT" in every country IF YOU LOOK FOR IT.
Romania has beautiful mountains and in most places you find old villages still untouched by progress, that look and run the same as they did for many generations. If you like history this "frozen image in time" it's pretty and different. The nature in Romania is worth been seen, while in the cities is a mix of old and new.
You must understand this country is still healing from 45 years of Communism. You can still see everywhere the remains of that Communism era. However you can also see many new international companies developing and doing very well over there. In mater of fact you will find NUMEROUS investors and business people moving to Romania and not only with the business.
The capital (Bucarest) has a very luxurious image. I was quite impress last year when I was in Romania.
As far as Gypsy's, well you will not find many in Romania. Every since they open the borders in 1990 most of them emigrated in France, Germany, and Spain. And the one who came back build palaces in Romania. So you won't find any poor and dirty Gypsy's over there. The only problem that Romania has right now is the bad economy, witch is not other people problem, but only OUR (Romanians) problem. It can only be fixed from inside with better decisions in politic and economy. I trust it will hapen, it's just take longer time than most people tought so.
I hope this answere your question, and if you want to know more about Romania and see images I will be glad to send you pictures.

I say "Amen" to what Tess said. Romania is the most wonderful destination in Europe with the coolest people you'll ever find.
As for the Gypsies originating from Romania, I think this is an all-time low of greneral knowledge attained by answerers in this category. Everybody (or so I thought) knows that Gypsies originate from India and spread over the whole of Europe ever since the Middle Ages. Their language is Indic and closely related to Punjabi. And do I detect a scent of racism in the implication that Gypsies are dirty? I'm sure that for such words as the ones written by the first answerer here, in Romania you'd be fined the equivalent of 5 monthly salaries, or be sentenced to 21 days community service under the non-discrimination law.
I'll tell you something true about Romania in one sentence:
Romania is the country with the most impressive scenery in Europe, whose people are decent, dignified citizens of the European Union.
The rest is spewed hatred.

Not true at all, Romania is one of the best places to visit in Europe. People are VERY friendly, there is no crime and the cities are not dirty. In fact Paris and London are much dirtier than Bucharest. Ploesti is an industrisal town, it's not for sight seeing. The country side is gorgeous and virtually untouched. Also they have in my opinion the most beautiful girls in Europe. I know this cause i lived there for a year and if i highly recommend it to you for a visit. All that stuff you said is not true at ALL.

No one can say bad things about Romania as long as they didn't visit this country. Romania is a peaceful country, it never had wars with anyone and they only helped other countries. It's not a rich country because it didn't have colonies and things like that. Rich countries nowadays got their wealth by destroying other people's lifes. The Romanian people is civilized, hospitable, educated and you can feel wonderful with wonderful Romanians. Trust me! Romania is the native country of many important scientists, cultural, reseach, music personalities that only not educated people didn't hear of. Romania is the country where education is the most focused on. It's a very beautiful country with outstanding sights and you can easily find true friends in Romania. I have!

The first "lady" that has answered your question is very ignorant, stupid and I feel sorry for her and her parents because they haven't raised her very good. Who says that about Romania? Dirty or not, it's like many other countries all around the world.
