Basically separates the skull from the spine, essentially severing the nerve cord between the brain and the rest of the body. It could also do this at other junctions of the spinal cord, but a hanging applies most of the force between the skull itself and the rest of the body so separation at the 1st vertebra of the spine from the skull is typical.
This is almost the same as decapitation by guillotine except that it is possible for the person to stay conscious for even longer.

hanging at a gallows - the noose is tied around the neck and the accused is hung by a chair or similer item of support being kicked underneath them, The noose constricts the two major arteries in the neck killing the victem in 10 - 30 seconds. People do not die from suffocation when hung like some idiots say, People who are hung in this manner die from blood loss to the brain.
hanging from trap door (typical british execution pre-1960)
here the accused has the noose tied around the neck and a trap door is released causing the accused to fall several feet breaking the neck instantly.
The executioner had to carefully calculate the victems weight against the length of rope as if they were to heavy and the rope too long the, the head could be ripped off the body (this has hapened in britain before).

That depends on how the hanging is done. Sometimes the person is dropped from a platform through a trapdoor, in which case the neck is usually broken. Or the person is hoisted up so the feet are off the ground, then gradual suffocation results.

Sometimes the neck breaks killing instantly, but usually suffocation. That's why they let them swing for a few minutes before they take them down.

It's supposed to break your neck. A lot of people that try it at home end up slowly choking/suffocating to death because they don't fall hard enough or from a high enough point.

If it is done 'humanely' the sudden drop is enough to break the neck. If not, then the victim slowly suffocates.

i think every one knows it breaks the neck. you know your body is heavy. do you really think a rope can hold you up by your neck? no way let's be real. by a person wiggling it makes it tighter.
