I'v been scratching up the rosin after a couple strokes, which is when there is no white powder left on the cake. Should I be doing that?

I just scratch the rosin when the cake is new. After the top film wears off, you shouldn't have to scratch it any more.

You don't need to. I don't like to because it makes a chunky rosin mess and it also doesn't look as nice. After you use it a few times, the top film will wear off and it will go on smoothly.

No. you should only use the rosin when you first start playing the violin. Put a lot on the first time and you won't have to replace it.
