My favorite blues club is Blues on Halsted a small blues club just across the street from the very large Kingston Mines [another blues club].

Well, the proverbial best blues place in Chicago is probably the Checkerboard Lounge (http://metromix.chicagotribune.com/barsandclubs/108985,0,3296987.venue). Although it moved from its original location (some say that's for the better), it's still a legendary place. The crowd is mostly U of C students, I think.
Other notable blues places are Buddy Guy's Legends, B.L.U.E.S, Kingston Mines and Rosa's. Here's a list of most of the blues places in Chicago (http://metromix.chicagotribune.com/barsandclubs/search-venues.front?page=1&attribute-mmx-music-styles=mmx-music-styles-Blues&keywords=&attribute-mmx-dance-styles=mmx-dance-styles&attribute-mmx-bar-styles=mmx-bar-styles). A lot of the places only occasionally feature blues, so you'd better call first.
And as for the House of Blues, the only thing "blues" about it is the name. The place rarely features blues, at least on the main stage, and the little stage on the first floor has blues bands, but everybody is rushing around trying to eat and wait on tables.
