Hormonal birth control is quite safe, unless you are at high risk of a number of diseases. Talk to your doctor to find out what the risks to you are.
It can increase the risk of blood clots from 1 in 10,000 to 6-8 in 10,000, but being pregnant increases your risk to 1 in 200 anyway.
Most people take birth control pills before ever having a baby - they don't want to get pregnant! I started taking it 10 years ago when I was 17 to help regulate my periods.
It's 99.99% effective if used properly.
Start taking it soon, that way you will have had time to adjust to it and have it be fully effective by the time you get to your wedding. Congratulations on waiting by the way!

Your mother is fully uninformed. If that were the case, all those teens that take them because they've got whacked out periods are in SERIOUS trouble! I do believe that she might have confused the pill with an IUD - it is strongly advised that women who have not had a child not get an IUD.
However, the pill is exceptionally safe and highly recommended as a form of birth control, as long as you don't have any pre-existing conditions or a history of potential hazards (high blood pressure, blood clots, a history of heart disease or strokes, etc).
Talk to your doctor before you get married. The ceremony and all that is leading up to it will be stressful enough without adding this into the mix. The faster you get it resolved the better for you.
As for when to start, probably the sooner the better....that way you'll be regulated and used to using and taking them and have your body adjusted before you get married and know for pretty certain that you won't get pregnant right away.

Birth controll is safe.
Who do you think they are made for, THE PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T HAD KIDS YET.
If it is a concern talk to you gynocologist. You might ask them to put you on a pill with low hormones. All the pill does is FOOL your body into THINKING it's pregnant, so the egg doesn't stick to the uteral wall.
Of the all the forms out there the pill is the safest actually, thae patch, the shot, and the ring releases A LOT of hormones. When I was on the patch, I thought I was actually pregnant.
You should still use a condom, but since your married ( or in five months at least) STD's won;t be an issue for you. so on top of the birth controll use the pull out method.

Birth controls are safe for women, safe enough to be approved by the FDA; however, there are many risk and side effects (based on your medical history and it differs for each women) that can happen. I suggest that you talk to your mom about this and your doctor to see which birth control is right for you.
http://www.plannedparenthood.org/birth-control-pregnancy/birth-control/the-pill.htm
This is a site you can look @ to get more factual information about birth control pills. Since there are many types of birth control pills on the market today the risk varies with each brand. The best thing to do is to look @ each brand's health risk associated with the pills and talk to youd doctor.
Good Luck.

First off, start getting info from your doctor, not your mom. Birth control pills are very very safe. Start using them as soon as possible, because you may have to try using several different brands before you find one with the fewest side effects for you.
The chance of dying in childbirth is much much greater than the chance of dying from birth control.
