Dreams erase memories?

What theorist(s) believed that dreams were a way to erase certian memories that we don't need.

hmm..thats interesting. I had a dream last night that was unpleasant..yet I remember it.? I dont think that supports the theory....well, i guess thats why they are called theorists and not factualists.
