Someone told me that they went to a particular university, but when I called the university to ask about it; they said that there was never anyone by that name that ever attended there. Now I don't know what to think. I suspected that he might be lying. He could still swear that he went there, but I don't know what to believe.

You ask the school. Since you did, you have to assume they're lying. It's not too hard to show proof. Receipt for tuition, a diploma, yearbook, etc.

Are you an employer? Ask for a transcript. Are you a girlfriend? Go with your instincts. If you are checking up on him, you suspect something which means he has given you reason to doubt him. Ask him what year he graduated in.
