i know on the surface it doesnt really seem like that much, but is anyone else impressed with the job Brian Cashman has done with the Yankees this off season? Because i am very impress.. he has cut so much dead weight and added good pieces here and there. I mean he has picked up ALOT of 97mph throwing 23 year olds LOL.. i dunno if he's intending to keep them all, or if he is stockpiling to have inventory to trade, but i think he has done a great job.

That is a GREAT thing!

In two years with the Yankees, you never knew how Johnson was going to pitch from start to start. He was never great. He was good, average, or awful. When he was on, he would pitch 7 innings and give up 2 or 3 runs, when he was off, it was batting practice, like when he gave up three straight homers to the White Sox in 2005, and four in the inning. I know that he is getting older, and his back was bothering him, but I think the pressure of New York bothered him and he wasn't comfortable. Now they can get a younger arm in there, maybe Phillip Hughes sometime this year.

Cashman is doing an awesome job at acquiring young arms. He got three for Sheffield, one for Wright and two younger pitchers for Johnson (although Vizcaino is 32). Obviously he feels they can help the Yankees, but also you know he has to be stockpiling arms for potential trades this season. Guys who throw hard and are major-league ready are always in high demand. You have to love the direction that Cashman is going in. Unlike Theo Epstein, Cashman doesn't seek out the limelight despite having much more power. It looks like Cashman has almost total control of the team (if he didn't Torre would be gone), and he has the Yankee sticking to a plan, hopefully one similar to the plan they used when they were winning. I also know that Cashman wants to prove that he can win without having a huge payroll, and over the next two years, the contracts of Abreu, Posada, Giambi, and Mo expire. You know that he will bring back Mo and Posada, but at less money. It will be fun watching a younger, hungrier team.

I like what Cashman has done this off-season...even though it has been very un-Cashman. They have improved without spending Yankee dollars. IFFF this deal is true then the Yankees will have dumped their two biggest headaches in Sheffield and Johnson. They get several prospects in the deal in exchange for an extremely aging velocity-falling veteran. Actually, despite what some of these prior statements say, the Yankees farm system is one of the most depleted in baseball. They need a potential future and this deal helps that out. At the same time, it's not like they're throwing in the towel. They brought back Petite and Mussina, two veteran pitchers to mix in with Pavano (?), and their two younger pitchers Wang and Igawa. The Yankees as usual will be just fine.

Hey Kim Happy New Year.
I am extremely happy with the moves that Cashman made and didn't make this off season. Getting rid of Wright and Sheffield was a great move. We got some young pitchers that could help in the future and got rid of a mediocre pitcher and a moody outfielder. Getting rid of the Unit is also a great move. He's winding down in his career and after back surgery this could be his swansong season. The moves hi didn't do makes this off season also good. No Zito, No Schmidt, No other mistake pitchers and that's what we might need to get back to the series.
I am really psyched about this season.

I think Cashman has done a great job this winter. We added a bunch of young arms to help the farm system as well as a couple who will help the big league club. Plus there's the addition by subtraction of getting rid of Johnson and Wright. Add that up with Pettite coming back and the Rocket soon to be in pinstripes, it looks to me like we will be having a great season in the Bronx!

I have to say in this case yes he made a great deal, dumped some of his salary and got some young talent, plus a fairly good releiver.

However I have to question... I heard the other day that the yankees signed another 1B....my question is why?? Jason Giambi is a great hitter and can manage to play the field well enough, and even if he cant Andy Phillips proved he can play the position and hit exceptionally well, if your gonna DH Giambi, why bother signing someone else when you've got Phillips sitting right there waiting?

but Yea, I think this particular deal was a good one.

Kimpossible.....the Yankees have more talent in the minor leagues than most teams do. So I actually agree with the statement because I am not sure how they keep trading young talent & getting great players in return. However, I do think they will start to look within the organization the next few years with such players as Robinson Cano, Melky Cabrera, Phillip Hughes, Eric Duncan, & Jose Tabata climbing up the depth charts & making major contributions at the big league level!!!

Cashman did a GREAT job,Unloading the trouble maker Shef,Johnson who was always grumpy,is arm and his heart was never in NY!! Picking up a bunch of young arms is a feather in our hat.The resigning of Pettitte, who's heart and arm was always in Ny was a great move,,I'm hoping Clemens will follow soon.I'm very sad to see Bernie Williams let go! I agree with your statement. Cashman has been great this offseason. The best is yet to come-Clemens for the full year in his Final Year.

Ya, anytime you can get rid of an aging pitcher and get talent to boot you are doing something right.
Now if he could just get Jeter to stop being so selfish and let Arod(the best SS in the game) play shortstop things would start looking up for their World Series possibilities.
