My pygmy goat is due to kid around the twenty first of January, and I've heard that by checking the ligments at the base of the tail you can tell when they will go into labor. In previous years I have been able to check on her multiple times, but when I turned 18 I moved out. My parents promised to let me keep my pets there until I graduate from nursing school and can afford my own place in the country. So as of now I live 7 minutes away, and cannot drive out ten times a day for a week before she has the kids. It would be really helpful if someone could tell me what it feels like when the ligaments are completely gone. As of right now there is still maybe a half an inch of skin and muscle that I can feel when I pinch my fingers together at the base of her tail. Also, she has a history of triplets so I'm sure she will be earlier than her due date and I really don't want to miss the babies coming! She's a great mom, but I like to be there to make sure there are no complications.

The reason I want to know about the ligaments is because they are supposed to go into labor within 24 hours of them being gone.

Yes, her bag is really full. She has also developed hollows in her sides which makes me think the kids have dropped.

Caveman, your pygmy is sooo cute! My sweet little girl was bottle raised and kept in the house. Her mom had her in the middle of winter, and rejected her. So in the house she came! She had diapers for a while, but we eventually we had her potty trained to go on a pad.

Normally, those ligaments will feel kinda like pencils, when she gets closer to kidding, they will loosen and soften.
The spine will sink and the tail head will rise. You should be able to touch your fingers when you pinch them around the tail head...usually, they will kid within 12 hours.
But, I've had does whose tail ligaments were real loose and they didnt kid for a few days afterwards. I never really used the ligament rule as a basis with my does. I just kept an eye out for the other signs...tight skinny udder, discharge, restlesness, bleating etc.
Also, I could sit up in that barn 24/7 with my does and the minute I got up to use the bathroom...they would start to kid...happened everytime! lol

I got a pygmy too, I never heard of goat ligaments. She is near birth if her udders are full of milk. My goat thought she was pregnant for a long time. We even believed her, as she would puff her side out for attention. She sleeps on the foot of my bed and goes caving with me. Great Pet!!!
