The use of rainbow flags has a long tradition; they are displayed in many cultures around the world as a sign of diversity and inclusiveness, of hope and of yearning. This denotation goes back to the rainbow as a symbol of biblical promise when god gave the sign to Noah that there would never be a flood like the one that happened then ever again. The use of all the colours of the rainbow symbolises all flags of gay people.

The rainbow flag, sometimes called 'the freedom flag', has been used as a symbol of gay and lesbian pride since the 1970s. The different colors symbolize diversity in the gay community, and the flag is often used as a symbol of gay pride in gay rights marches. It originated in the United States, but is now used around the world.

The rainbow flag was first used to symbolize gay pride and diversity by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker

Because the rainbow is a spectrum, as is human sexuality. The Rainbow doesn't symbolize just homosexuality, but everyone. All colors of skin, all variations of gender. It's a symbol meaning that it takes all of us to make us what we are. With any one color missing from the rainbow, there would be no such thing as white.

rainbow or rainbow flag
--a gay pride symbol, designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978, originally having eight stripes: hot pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet, which stood for sexuality, life, healing, the sun, nature or serenity, art, harmony, and spirit. The hot pink stripe was dropped when flag makers couldn't find suitable material, and the indigo stripe was dropped to make the flag more balanced, so that three stripes could hang on either side of lampposts at Pride Parades.

Rebel F- Was your mother or father gay and just didn't show you enough attention or what?

The RAINBOW has nothing to do with Moses or the rainbow whatever.
The Rainbow has many diffent colors. The flag acutally used to be Bright pink, Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple.

The reason why they took the Rainbow as their flag, was just due to what the colors stand for...Not anything to do with religion.

Okay..will people STOP refering to Biblical passages for the reason why we are gay or why we have the rainbow flag? Its stupid!

Easy, it symbolizes that in a rainbow, we should all get along in harmony with one another regardless of sex, race, color, sexual orientation, gender expression, etc. We should all be one wonderful unit like a rainbow.

At least that is my interpretation.

It's a symbol of their diversity. There are many different colors, so to speak.

It's not meant as a slam against the Noah story.

The wiki article is pretty good.

It doesn't symbolize gay culture exclusively so much as appreciation for human diversity (including sexual diversity).

Rebel F - You're one ignorant person.

One day discrimination against gays will be viewed the same as is discrimination against race, and when that day comes it's people like yourself that will stand out as wrong.

And that's coming from a straight man.
