I am a native Vermonter and have heard this numerous times, but I cannot find any resources which prove the truth of this claim. Does anybody out there have any links or ways to prove this to me? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Yes, and it was orginally a disputed territory between New Hampshire and New York - they almost had a mini war over it.

Vermont was it's own colony, not country. Now Texas on the other hand, was it's own country at one time.
