As a general overall total.. what % should I be spending on payroll overall.

Depends on your profit margin, no more than 20% though. Other than that keep it as low as the market will bear. I keep mine at 15%.

According to WSJ article, you should be saving 20% from take home pay. Rest can be used for expenses: mortgage, car payment, etc.

20-30% in metro areas alittle more in rural areas

30% is the widely accepted target.This can change depending on the industry.
