As soon as they have teeth.
My 10 month has two on top and two on bottom and i use an orajel toothpaste for infants. It comes with a brush that goes over your finger to brush them with and it's so soft, my daughter laughs every time it tickles her gums.

I started brushing my kids teeth with the little finger brush once they got some, I just used water until they were a year old, then I started using the baby toothpaste, now my kids are 3 and almost 2 and they use a toothbrush and kids toothpaste to brush there teeth. I just don't want them to have any problems with the teeth or gums and I thought getting them on the right path with good oral hygiene now will help them later.

Actually, you should start rubbing their gums with a soft cloth before they even have teeth and brushing with and infant toothbrush and infant toothpaste as soon as they do. I had to use a toothbrush from the beginning because my little on bites. They should not start brushing their own teeth until they are 5 or 6.

A baby should NEVER brush their own teeth. They don't clean them well enough and they could gag themselves with the toothbrush.
A toddler can brush but only after you do it first. My son started around the age of 2. Just make sure he knows the proper way to use a toothbrush.

I just took my 3 year old son to his second dental appointment. Our dentist, at his last app't, told us not to use a toothbrush but to use a wet washcloth on his teeth and then have him rinse. No toothpaste, with fluoride or without, is necessary. He told us the same thing at this visit.
We were told that a toothbrush damage the gums by making them recede if the bristles aren't soft enough or if it is used too roughly.
We've taken his advice and so far, my son's teeth are perfect. We'll start using a toothbrush and toothpaste next year when our son turns 4. Hope this helps.

When they have teeth you can brush them. Some people even start brushing before teeth come.

My son is 16 months old and I've been trying to brush his teeth but he really won't let me.He'd rather play with the toothbrush! I still try, I figure that if I get him used to it then one day maybe it go more smoothly.

we started brushing our sons teeth as soon as he got one, he is 16 months old now and has 8 teeth and brushes them his self now, we started letting him do it himself when he turned one. then once we saw he had the hang of it we stopped going in behind him to make sure it was done right.

Your meant to get them to start using a toothbrush when the first tooth appears but I waited till there was 2 or 3, then let them play with it and show them what they are meant to do with it.
