He played bass, but he wasn't the best bassist ever. Jaco Pastorius was probably the best bassist ever.

Don't forget Tommy Shannon from Stevie Ray Vaughan's band, Double Trouble..........yes ~~~~ Oh, PS, Tommy played one of Jimi Hendrix's bass guitars, so ya, Hendrix did play bass too. ~~~

Hendrix played the bass parts on a guitar in the song RED HOUSE... there is no standard bass in that song.
