Post play is pretty difficult, i think the keys to a great Post Player are good footing, be strong(mentally and physically), and to keep your composure through out the game. The reason i said to keep your composure is because in the beginning of the game you might not get the ball, and maybe the guards will only drive in and forget about the post man/woman. So keep your composure and play hard everytime you hit that floor.

They dont really need to be big or tall, because i have a friend thats about 5'10-5'11 and im 6'1 and he usually plays the post because he knows how to. I just dont like the post i can play it but i just dont like it i usually play the Small Forward or Shooting Guard so im barely in the post. So to answer ur other question no you dont really have to be big or tall.

The ability to read his opponent, and be able to adjust to their weaknesses. If the defender is stronger, he should be able to use speed or agility to get past them. If the opponent is quicker, he should use strength to overpower the defender. The player should also know when not to force a shot, and be able to know where his teammates are at all times. Plus free throws are a must for any low post player, seeing as they get fouled a good amount more.
