PROBLEM: The House Un-American Activities Committee became the Salem Witch Hunt of the 20th century. It started with the Hollywood Ten and snowballed from there. Have you ever seen the episode of M*A*S*H where Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Hoolihan was labeled as a communist sympathizer because at one time she dated some guy who, many years later, was listed as a subversive? They didn't have any real proof that SHE did anything that could be construed as un-American in any way -- it was all based on guilt by association and innuendo. That's exactly how the HUAC worked. No actual evidentiary proof was needed to accuse someone of being a subversive, and once you were accused you were presumed guilty until proven innocent (and no one who testified before the committee was ever proven innocent at the time of their testimony).
No, I'm convinced that the best way to deal with problems like this is to discredit the people who are speaking up and making such behavior socially unacceptable. Everyone has the right to speak their minds without fear of reprisal by the government, but the Constitution doesn't protect them from open criticism and vilification from people in the private sector. You want to take aim at the Hollywood personalities that are speaking out against the war? Start by getting people to boycott their movies, TV shows, public appearances, etc. Next step would be to show the American people exactly how ignorant and uninformed these people are and why anything they say about politics or foreign policy should not be taken seriously. Finally, go after the people who pay the outrageous sums of money to these people for their work by boycotting or discrediting them for supporting an actor or actress who is obviously a damn-fool and is doing nothing more than promoting disharmony and divisiveness. Hit the stars and starlets where they live -- in the wallet and in the limelight. They'll learn soon enough, as will their mainstream media lap-dogs.

Ah but you see, Air America, Barbara Striesand, George Clooney and those broads on the view are not Communists necessarily; they're just stupid.
Besides the best and most ethical way to cleanse the entertainment industry of this idiocy is to simply stop sinking so much money into it. If we would stop buying the product and therefore not pay attention to these whackos, they would stop spewing such garbage as they currently do and get back to acting, singing and taking up space on couches (aka "talk show hosting").

Yes the Democrats should start one Immediately. America has been subverted by a semi-secret organization that hates Freedom and Democracy, is intent on destroying the Government "like Drowning it in a bath tub",
Has used every illegal , and otherwise unethical trick to subvert honest organizations like Fundamentalist Churches, and the Republican party, and well as created a lot of new "front" organizations like the Orwellian list of "think tanks".
Has actually subverted at least three elections and was unsuccessful in subverting a 4th. And has members working against American interests in the Highest levels of Government.
Everything Joe McCarthy claimed that was not true then, had his friends taking notes, and actually doing those things since.
Worse, many of them not only want to rule every moment and thought, but have a list of thought crimes they would kill to enforce, that if they got their way would be the biggest bloodbath in world history, things the Communists never dreamed about, even Stalin, as murderous as he was.
If Americans had the barest clue of the reality, there would be a revolution in te streets.

ABSOLUTELY
How about to start hearings on the treasonous New York Times. Their new slogan seems to be " All the news that's fit to harm the United States"
Why under the guise of freedom do we allow people to work to destroy us? "The constitution is not a suicide pact"
The crybabies of the left never acknowledge that HUAC found that many were Soviet spies, that many were actively trying to harm this country. Look how they despise Elia Kazan for telling the truth.
By the way your avatar is great, anyone ever figure out why the left idolizes a mass murdering psychopath like Che?

No it isn't but that's where America is going so they probably will.
Can't you see that what you are asking for is tantamount to wanting to live in a fascist state? Don't you want to live in a free country where people have the right to think and say what they want? I mean, I know that the idea that America is a free country and is fighting for this around the world is a crock of you know what so you might as well make a clean break of it but surely even traliler trash like yourself can see that this kind of mentality only benefits the rich and powerful...

The very existence of such a committee is a disgrace to the country and that anyone would consider it just goes to show how many paranoid morons that still exist in this country.Arresting some for having a opinion different than yours gives them the right to arrest you for your opinions.which is what most of our families came to this country to get away from.

I couldn't agree more. But you did not go far enough. I think we should also bring back the era of Hoover's FBI, wherein he had so many nasty secrets on all the presidents that not one dared get rid of him. Then I would like to see the 1918 influenza pandemic. I understand the suffering and smell were intolerable.
Speaking of diseases, I would like to see how this country would fare with another Black Plague. Let's bring that one back.
Oh, oh, how 'bout the Holocaust?
I'm all for reliving the despair, the misery, the ruined lives and careers, the hysteria, and the terror of every miserable misstep the world has taken. Right on, brother...

No, that was a pretty sad time in our history and its implications reached far beyond Hollywood.
They even forced public school teachers to pledge 'loyalty' to the government. Those who refused got fired and it took years before they got their jobs back.
I'm no Communist supporter, but the enemies of the USA are no longer in the form a single nation or political system.
