Hmmmmmm that is a tough one!
I am going to have to go with Metallica but I have to say that Maiden is only behind them by a hair.
Maiden's album covers are way better than Metallica's, Eddie rules!

Iron Maiden every time! They are the Gods of Metal!
Every song puts you in a different place and time, from the time of the Egyptian Pharaohs to the distant future, and every tale is one of action, mystery or mythology. When I listen to Maiden I can picture being there, and as I'm a patriot, I listen to "The Trooper" and "These Colours Don't Run" with pride and passion.
I saw them in Manchester in December and they played the entire "A Matter Of Life And Death" album. I was awestruck
Don't get me wrong, Metallica are great too, saw them at Download last year and they played the entire "Master of Puppets" album for us, it was fantastic, but nobody beats Iron Maiden in my eyes!

go back to the 70s for the founders of metal -- led zep, ac/dc and black sabbath. all three are godfathers of metal
