Ballroom ladies: most important and unavoidable is dance shoes. As fas as clothes goes:

For practce we wear and any comfortable decent-looking clothes. No jeans. Usually, I wear a stretchy top or a leotard and stretchy pants. Sometimes I wear skirts - short skirt for Latin and long skirt for Standard.

For competitions - depending on the level you are, you either wear something similar to your practice skirt and top but a little nicer, if you are a beginner. If you are more advanced ( Championship, Pre-Champoinship, and one stage before pre-champ it that is called Novice) you wear a costume that is a ballgown or a latin dress. That is if you are copmpeting as an amateur with an amateur partner. If you are competing with a professional partner (your teacher) you wear ballgown/latin costume right away. Costumes are usually heavily decorated with rinestones to make you shine and stand out. More advanced people wear flashier outfits.

It REALLY depends on the dance and whether it's for practice or for a performance. Ballet dancers wear tight clothes, usually a leotard tights, maybe a skirt and ballet slippers or pointe shoes. I'm not sure about hip hop, a think it varies. And ballroom dancers usually wear long dresses and high heel shoes. Look up pics on google or videos on youtube.com .

I think most everyone has answered the question about the clothes but Snowflake mentioned something that should be elaborated on: Dance shoes. Many people who do couples dancing (ballroom, Salsa, Swing, etc) alot will often invest in dance shoes which basically have a sort of suede on the bottom for easier movement. Dance floors have a bit of wax on them and that wax builds up on the suede and makes it too slick so when buying the shoes the person also needs to buy the brush to "fluff" the suede again. As with most clothing, women have the greater variety: High/mid/low heels and open or closed toe. Most of the women's heeled shoes will have a strap to keep it secure. Mens shoes come either flat or with a slight heel that I think is called a Cuban heel. For people who don't dance enough that they want to invest in shoes with suede bottoms, leather bottoms are the next best thing as rubber could cause the foot to stick at a crucial moment and injure the knees.

Typically ballet dances wear tights, a leotard, ballet/pointe shoes, and if allowed, a skirt. In the winter at my studio we wear leg warmers and dance sweaters. They also allow ballet "shorts" in some classes, which are like really short fabric shorts.

Hip hop dancers can wear pretty much anything that looks good and allows them to carry out their moves. Baggy pants, cute but comfy shirts, jazz sneakers, or even tennis shoes.

Jazz dancers wear jazz pants, tights, a leotard, and of course jazz shoes or jazz sneakers.

Ball room dancers can wera pretty much anything comfy for practice, but for performences of course they must dress for the occasion.

Female ballet dancers wear tights, leotards, and ballet shoes. Depending on how strict the school is, they may also be allowed to wear short chiffon wrap skirts, various types of warm-ups like legwarmers, shorts, sweaters, etc. At the school I attended, we also often wore a thin elastic belt around our waists.

It varies with the style of dance, and whether it is for practice/rehearsing, or for a performance, and the type of performance it is.

For practice or rehearsing, most dancers wear something that is comfortable. For a performance, the costume depends on the dance style and whether or not the performance is a formal or informal type of performance.

ballet- leotard (certain color depending on what grade ballet we are in), pink tights, clean ballet shoes, hair in good bun

tap & jazz- any color leotard, and color tights, hair up, and appropriate shoes
