It depends on how much you want to be involved in the wedding. If you're involved in the whole thing, you're pretty much the "middle man". Instead of the couple dealing with vendors, you deal with them. Also, you'd be making sure ALL aspects of the wedding going smoothly. You're pretty much there to keep the bride and groom less stressed. That's pretty much the jist, other stuff goes along with it of course.
I've actually been taking online courses at Penn Foster Career School. They can give you info about the program and it's very inexpensive.

You don't actually need any sort of education to become a wedding planner, but most couples will probably see it as a plus if you have some sort of certification to show to.
I would think the hardest part at first would be to get clients, but as one works up a portfolio and a reputation it should get easier.

To get experience, plan your first wedding for a friend, co-worker, or relative. The more weddings you plan, the more brides will contact you.

Try doing one or two for free. It gives you experience and references for new clients. And you decide if you really like it.
