What equipment do I need to maintain a fish tank? Besides the obvious tank itself and the filter. And I'm not talking about gravel or rocks or anything, I mean equipment. Right now, I have the net to catch dead fish in and chlorine remover and a heater. But that is it.

For a Freshwater tank I'm assuming?
You need the tank and filter, which you have
You need a heater (a submersible one is best, if that's not what you have)
You should have a thermometer (not the kind that sticks on the side lik tape - an actual thermometer with a suction cup that goes inside the tank)
You need a hood and lights (fluorescent, if you want plants)
You can get an airpump. They oxygenate the water and look nice, but they are not necessary.
That's about it for basic equipment. If you are going into high tech planting, in which case you can get CO2, or a UV sterlizer, but they are not at all necessary for a normal tank.

depends on the type of tank, i'm assuming when you said you have a heater you are planning a tropical tank. You would be best to speak to someone at a pet shop or aquarium.
but i have a tropical tank and use tap water conditioner(de chlorinates tap water, protects scales etc.) conditioning salts (maintaind harndess), you may need to occasionally check the Ph levels, you can get Ph testers from pet stores or aquariums, i have also got a bubble wall in the tank to put more oxygen in the water.

you should get a siphon & hose to help clean the tank, a separate sponge to help wipe, or just spend a little extra and get a algae sponge to clean the tank and decor in it.
You should also have on hand, water conditioner, melafix just in case.
