For example, some of my college professors have been pretty good-looking and down-to-earth people, and while I have had some Indian/Arab ones, they hardly get the respect that other teachers.

Do you think looks have anything to do with confidence and how people perceive you? For example, could you see a guy who wears "gangster" clothing becoming a college professor? A doctor?

no doctors have dress codes and what would you call gangster clothing................ well if your talking about sagging and stuff like that sure i can see a professor like that he would be young but he would not have gotten the job dress like that or any job so appearance does play a role. girls that are hot and smart would get further in the world then a ugly smart 1. it's a double standard girls have to be i candy and boys just have to be qulified

Unfortunately, sad but true!

Many hirings and advancements are initied on looks and appearance.
That does not necessarily mean that one "remains in a position if not qualified", but doors do open.

One should not use a diminished appearance as a crutch. It may take a bit more smarts, ambition, and drive.

Sorry, it's just the way some people look at hiring. It can happen if the one doing the hiring is a bit homely. They will not hire one too good looking. It works both ways. Even overweight can have an effect. It will never be expressed for fear of rights violation.

It is of the utmost importance to always be "FAIR" in the treatment of employees, including hiring.

Yes i do believe looks are important,if you want a high dollar job and you walk in with tore up jeans oil covered shirt and you look rough they will turn you down but if you come in nice looking etc. then yes they will consider hiring you but also looks are`nt every thing they can`t get you real love if you got a date and your really handsome this girl only cares for your looks not whats inside as long as there is somthing for her to look at she will of corse say she "loves" you but thats just a example of what looks and good looks do,Yes they can somtimes get you a job and mabe even a girl but they can`t help you survive the real world ppl who send bills don`t care that your handsome they just want the money so my point is yes looks can take you far but can`t always get you what you want. And i wouldn`t be able to look at a gangster and tell hes a proffeser "can`t always judge a book by his cover" a guy could be walking down the street with tore up cloths but you would never know he was a electrition i know this is long but its my way of looking at it.

Absolutely!
Its a proven fact that the more attractive you are the more likely you are to succeed (generally)
However, personal choices can derail your success no matter how good you look.
