First of all, you need to know the species of the tree. Chances are, you received bad instruction as to where to keep it. Many bonsai are outdoor trees (no matter what the instructions say), and if you keep it inside, it will be dead within 6 months. You're welcome to email me at
wchoat@american-bonsai.com and either send a photo or describe the foliage, then we can go from there. To thoroughly answer all your questions, you'll need a good bonsai book such as Bonsai Basics. Also, you'll want to take a look at my website www.american-bonsai.com

It would help to know which tree you have. Evergreen bonsai trees must be grown outside in summer and in a cool garage in winter (depending on where you live)

The idea of having bonsai means you want to miniaturize a tree. Each year, you should take off as much soil as possible, cut some of the roots in proportion with how much you cut the top branches of the tree. (This is why it is necessary to know which tree you have)

Books on bonsai are fairly cheap on ebay.
