Because when a person smokes a cigar cigarett etc, it tends to make ash. so you would need a tray to hold that ash. hence the name ASHTRAY. =o)

300 years ago, they used to be called wine glasses. But everybody kept putting their cigarette ashes in their drinks. So they changed the names soon thereafter.
