if you have "wired internet" you can easily convert that to wireless by buying a wireless router. Also, make sure your computer has a wireless card.

Buy a wireless adaptor if your system is not already wireless ready.

Once you do that you can subscribe to a wireless service that will provide you with wireless internet connectivity based on various wireless hotspots in your area (it's important to choose a carrier that has hotspots around you or you may not get a signal or a very weak one).

The other way to do it is to subscribe to DSL and network your computer that way. The one good thing about connecting your computer through your DSL is that you can add up to 10 other computers to this connection if they are wireless as well (but you will need a home router). The negative of this is that you can only connect within a designated area and will not have access to a carrier hotspot like you would if you subscribed to the first service I suggested.

There is ricochet in San Diego and I think in some part of Colorado. Also, Verizon has wireless broadband in some markets. There may be other phone companies. They twould require an external modem for desktop computers

Try to do a search for "wireless broadband"

If your telephone company provides Internet service or, you live in an area where you are able to use a service such as Earthlink broadband, then all you need is a wireless networking card and a router. I would recommend Netgear [http://www.netgear.com].
