unplug the power and check for any items inside that my be binding the grinding mechanism. Also, let it cool down for a couple of hours before retrying the reset button.

Sounds like it is jammed with something, when it was new it came with a tool to allow you to turn in backwards. If you don't have it still a regular allen wrench about a 1/4 inch will work. on the bottom of the disposer you will see where it goes. most disposer turn clockwise ( looking in from the top) try to turn it counter clockwise and see if you can free the impellers. Please make sure to unplug or disconnect the power from it before sticking your hand in there. If you pull on the rubber flapper it will come out. shine a flashlight down in there and I bet you might even find that ole' dusting rag you were looking for!! Good luck!

there is something that had logged in between blades (bone, utensils, coins, broken glass etc) that's why it's just hums then eventually, shuts off from overload protection. unplug the unit, use a broom stick and spin the blade, dislodging the item and clear it out. it should spin and work again. if it hums again, the matter had not been cleared. Remember!!! unplug it and make sure the unit is off before reaching inside with your bare hands.

Unplug the disposal first. then try to spin the motor, look for a hole in the bottom of the unit at dead center. Insert a allen key and turn the shaft .If the shaft will not turn junk the unit. At home depot you can pick up a new one for $59.00 , and install it yourself. The directions are really simple.

there may be a key that looks like an allen wrench that came with it. It sticks in the center bottom, turn it a half turn. That breaks up any jambs. remove key, turn on disposer for 10 secs. If it's spinning, throw a few ice cubes in it to see what happens.
