Brass tools don't give off sparks which is very dangerous on an oil rig for obvious reasons.

In theory brass tools can not cause a spark and are therefore inherently safe to use in a flamable hydrocarbon ladened atmosphere. I worked on Oil tankers for 20 years and found brass tools as good as usless. We took the view that if there was a flamable atmosphere we simply did not tackle the job till the gas was cleared.

Not just oil rigs but most flammable chemical processes.

Usually on a rig only the sledgehammers wil be "non- sparking" nowadays. And it's not brass, which would be too soft, but usually an alloy.

Brass does not produce a spark. Even if it does spark, it is not very strong and not hot enough to ignite anything.

The nature of oil itself produces many dangerous gasses that ignite easily. Using brass instead of steal reduces the risk of accidental explosion.

They are non-sparking. When you are working around flammable materials, this can be very important. One spark from a steel wrench can make for a very bad day.

They don't damage other components as the brass is a very soft metal which means any damage that occurs will be on the tool itself. Brass has a low conductivity of electricity so it is a little safer for the user.
