females develop a deeper body as the fill with roe, and have a larger vent (just before the anal fin) than the males.
males develop breeding tubercles (white pimples) on the gill covers and on theleading edge of the pectoral fins
Breeding commons is fairly easy. In breeding condition the males will develop small white spots on his gill covers and the female will become plump. The male will chase the female until she releases her eggs, then the male will release sperm and they will become fertilised. The eggs will then stick to any available surface. It is then best to remove the eggs to a separate aquarium as the adults are likely to eat them. When the eggs hatch into fry they will need to be fed very small food such as hatched brineshrimp or a ready made fry food. As they grow bigger they can eat finely crumbled fishfood eventually the pieces getting bigger

Breeding them is a lot easier than sexing. Fin shape does not really determine sex. During spawning, males will develop pronounced white bumps in his gills and fins.
While not spawning. sexing is almost impossible. The female may be slightly rounder and have a more pronounced vent.

As I say, breeding is easy. Daytime temp should be around 70F, nighttime can be 50-65F. The male will begin chasing the female, and when she is ready, she will drop her eggs which will stick, and the male will fertilize them. Eggs should be removed and raised artificially. Place them in a 20 gallon tank with 5-6 inches of aged water (from the parents' tank). They will hatch in 3-4 days at 70F. Add a few drop methylene blue, or 10mL of hydrogen peroxide, to stave off fungus. Remove any fungused eggs. They will hatch, and 2 days later they will have used up their yolk sacs. Feed baby brine shrimp , liquid fry food, powdered egg, infusoria, etc.

you don't want to!! i started with 5 and now have over 50! you can't sex them defiantly unless you see the female laying eggs and the male fertilizing them! it is simple make it seem like spring!! do large water changes and let the temp drop about 3 degrees!!

I've never even heard of someone breeding any kind of fish before. It sounds hard but I'm sure there's a way. You could go and see if there's a book about it.
