The two films have nothing in common, and for different reasons are both good films.

"Brokeback Mountain" was way more sincere than "Trash." Er, "Crash."
"Crash" was just a movie white people could feel good about seeing for two main reasons:
1. Because just about everyone in that movie was racist, which many white people find reassuring somehow, almost as if it absolves us of our culpability for still being the dominant social group and laughing at racist jokes.
2. The racism was obvious and in-your-face, which makes white people feel good because they think they must not be racist themselves if they don't say such things out loud. However, the truth is that the most pernicious forms of prejudice are invisible and often too subtle to be understood as racist without careful examination. "Crash" didn't even touch this.
Basically, it didn't challenge its audience at all.
"Brokeback Mountain" was a much more real story to me, and many gay men (especially those living in rural areas) saw a lot of themselves in the characters and the social and emotional pressures they had to contend with. It was also artistically masterful in a way that "Crash" simply never achieved. It gets sadder every time I watch it.
As for challenging its audience, there were theaters that refused to show "Brokeback," and the religious right got its knickers all up in a twist about it. Yes, it most definitely challenged people, and I consider this a necessary condition for something to qualify as great art.

I only saw Brokeback Mountain. It had a good message, stunning visuals and I really enjoyed the music too.
Maybe I will checkout Crash one of these days :P

crash by far. brokeback mountain was okay. but crash wins hands down. The director and writer just wrote such a true beautiful movie that really depicts how a lot of people are and brings to light how a lot of people feel even when they won't admit it.
