I have worked with mentally challenged people. Some of them are smarter than you think. Some of them do know what the word retard means and it hurts their feelings. Some adults who are mentally challenged have the mental state of a 16 year old.

My son is autisitic and has been able to read since he was five and he has an excellent memory. Some "retards" are smarter than you are. And the reason why he would not get offended by you calling him a retard? Because he IS smarter than you and obviously more evolved, compassionate and loving.

I agree. Words can only hurt us if we let them. And if we don't even understand them, then they really are harmless.
