It really depends on the school. At small schools, you can often apply, get provisionally admitted and register for classes on the same day if you walk the paperwork through.

But other schools have longer waiting times.

Every school publishes (online) an academic calendar. The dates for application etc are published there.

Unless the school has very selective admissions, you can usually apply for admission and get an answer the month before the semester starts.

For example, if you wanted to go this fall, you would need to apply anytime between now and "probably" August. (But, like I said, every school is different.

This doesn't apply to financial aid decisions which are controlled by the Federal government. Those deadlines are pretty much engraved in stone.

You can apply before the first semester in which you plan to attend or up to a year before. Once you fill out the application and are accepted, you declare a major or undecided, get an adviser, get course requirements, bulletins, etc., and register for classes. Your academic adviser or the registrar's office can help you with the registration process.

Good Luck...hope this helps!

Typically, you don't enroll in college until a year after you apply. So if you applied in September 2007, you wouldn't start until September 2008. Many colleges make exceptions, however, for people returning to school or transfering from a community college. Talk to the college in which you are interested and ask them about their specific policies (and scholarships while you're at it).
