Hi, that was a bad answer from the first person there. Your ear holes will NOT rip the whole way. Wow, I have never heard that before. Well I supposed they could if you went gigantic from a tiny gauge but that would have to be done with a scalpal.

ANYWAY! So you're at a normal gauge right now most likely, a 20 or 22. Sliding a 14 gauge in should be pretty much painless, I would go with a hoop when gauging at first for less hassle.

I use tapers now that I am at bigger gauges like the 2s I currently am at, but I didn't begin using them until I went from a 6 to a 4 for about the 3rd time. If I was you I would always use tapers though, it's so easy, and it's the proper way to go about it as well.

Anyway, you should be able to slide a 14 gauge through, a 12 will struggle, and a 10 might just plain hurt, but they will all go through easily. The gauges really don't jump much between sizes until you go from an 8 to a 6.

I recommend purchasing earrings at places like HecoolShecool.com, Bodycandy.com.... or even on Ebay.com, that is where I got the ones I am wearing right now! Don't pay for over priced merchandise at places like HotTopic.

You really shouldn't put gauges in your ears, it's not attractive at all, plus it could cause your ear lobe to rip all the way through, and most doctors will not stitch it back once it rips. So, I recommend not putting gauges in your ears at all. Haha and no im not saying this just because of my personal preference, My ear is 1ml away from ripping all the way through, so it is possible.
