This is a really difficult career for a single mom, as the hours are long (24 hour shifts are the norm) and sometimes very irregular. Finding childcare will be nearly impossible, unless you have a friend or family member willing to watch them. It's also very mentally and physically challenging. I coudn't imaging being a single mom and working as a paramedic! A better career choice (and it pays a whole lot more) would be LPN or RN. The LPN course is only about a year long, and there are usually part time or evening classes available. The RN class is a bit more rigorous and lasts for two years. The hours for LPN or RN are a lot easier (8-12 hour shifts), and it will be much easier to find childcare.

Paramedic school lasts for about a year for the certificate program, and two years for the associate's degree. The standard is moving towards the associates degree, and some states won't allow you to work there if all you have is a certificate. You need to be at least 19 or 21 depending on which state you work in, and have to be an EMT-Basic and have a GED or high school diploma. The prerequisite course, EMT-Basic, lasts for a semester and teaches you the introductory skills. Classes are usually full time, and you have to complete several hundred hours of clinical rotations while you are in school. After school, you get to complete an unpaid internship with a local ambulance company. You might be able to do the internship part time, but most of us just bit the bullet and got it over with as quickly as possible.

Hope this helps...

Hun I'm sorry to tell you this but i was a paramedic for a while and its not a job for a single mom. let me explain in California it might be different in your state but medics work 48-72 hour shifts that's a lot of time away from the kids with 3-4 days off at a time its rough work but i will tell you about how you go about doing it (i remind you this is how it is in California. there's a 9 month course e.m.t. B. you must take it goes over the basics you will need to know plus allows you to do your clinicals and ride along they also administers the national registry test. but if you want to further your medical career become a nurse better money better hours better union more demand more respect just an all out better job
