acustic guitar? yes electric guitar- not necessarly. recommended- both, taking clases for whatever the type of guitar is, is always good to take some classes but it is more recomendable for the acustic guitar, why ? beacuse you need to learn the chords and most of the songs in acustic guitar are more of knowing how to read and write notes. so basically we are talking about real technical music. it's not beacuse tehy will teach you too much tips on how to grab the guitar or how to to this with your arm or things like that but the studying of the music will be very helpful to you. what i think is that if you really want to learn guitar, you will learn, it doesn't matter if you dont take clases because if you love music you will learn it anyways. A lot of times people who start practicing guitar they quit in 3 or 5 months, why? beacuse they did not take lessons, but in my opinion that's not an excuse, it is simple, if you love music you will learn, if you dont love music, probably you will just waste your time. so if you wanna play some rock the electric guitar, you dont need classes at all but it is recommendable to take some lesssons later when having 4 or 5 years practicing. in this cases i think that it gets to be later not at the beginning like the acustic. the reason is beacuse for rock and the electric guitar you leanr the basic things easly by yourself, so you dont need to know very much about the technical stuff beacuse they are harder to learn, so with electric guitar you first learn the basic then you move on with the hardest skills and techniques so you may take lessons to perfect all the technicques and also to actually learn how to do them, that the time when you really need help at something, but again it is good to take lessons no matter what and the most important thing is not how many lessons you take or the teachers or that, the most important thing here is you, the hours you put in practice is what makes the difference. the hours you practice is what you are gonna improve, if you dont practice, it doesn't matter how many lesson you might take, they will be worhtless. you need to ptactice 8 hours a day, 7 days a week, for a couple of years then it's up to you, but i mean playing guitar is life-style, you live with it 24/7, you will have your guitar all the time like if it's part of you and get used to it cuz it'll be your partner for quiet a while.

Yes, I did that.If you want, I think the rock house dvds are pretty decent, and you can buy a infinite amount of books on chords and scales so just go with whatever you want.Try to stay away from the ones that say"in the style of", and try to find the ones where the actual guitarist you like is teaching-Petrucci, Micheal Romeo, and Paul Gilbert are all masterful guitarists and all have videos out.But work on basics first because those artist ones assume you know certian scales etc allready.

Point is as long as you take your time and work on everything slowly and do it right instead of rushing along, you can learn any way you want.

It's very possible, even without books. Everyone in the 60s and 70s just picked one up, learned how to tune it from a friend and just played, lousy at first and got better and better learning things from each other. I know many very good players who have never taken a lesson nor looked into a book.

yeah, i learned how to play guitar without lessons, its very easy if you have patience and you really are serious about doing it.

you have to first ask yourself if you really want to take on an endeavor such as learning an instrument. theres going to be lots of times where you feel like a moron because you cant do something, but you have to keep going. 60% of people who play gutiar give up in the first 3 months. dont be one of those people.

as far as books go, dont waste your time and money with the cheap non-helpful books. i totally recommend the Fretboard Logic series, because it doesnt just teach you a few songs, it teaches you how to understand the guitar and how to manipulate its many wonders.

Good luck, i hope you learn to play.

Maybe, but you'd need to practice all the time, to put it mildly.
