Are you feeding them? Algae eating fish need to have a diet of algae pellets and zucchini; they cannot live on the algae in your aquarium.
Some algae eaters eat primarily driftwood, and some plecos are carnivorous, so you should look into which algae eater you have, to ensure you are feeding it correctly.

Also, plecos (which I'm assuming that's what you're refering to) are BIG fish, and they produce a lot of waste. They need surprisingly big (50 gallons+) tanks. If your tank is too much (like 10-20 glalons or less), that could also be the problem.

If your water parameters (pH, hardness, ammonia, nitrites, etc) are testing fine, one place to look might be the source. Walmart sells very sick, unhealthy fish, so make sure you get your fish from a reputable source.

We started keeping tropical fish a few months ago. We have lost quite a few fish although according to the guy at the fish shop, we ae doing nothing wrong. We have also managed to have 2 lots of baby fish. The second lot had over 20 babies and we now only have 5 left. Have you checked to see if any of the othe fish are eating them. We have severum and they eat the smaller fish if we don't feed them enough. Evil buggers even ate 2 of my babies that I had reared when I put them in the main tank. Think that if you keep fish it is just one of the downfalls to lose some of them.

Algae eaters of all sorts require Algae tablets, which are best given at night. Some types such as Pleco's also need to nibble at driftwood ( Bog wood ) This is because thay need the Lignin from the wood in order for them to digest their food properly.
