Goldfish come in many varieties and colours all produced by man! The original fish are a Greenish gold in colour and are a member of the carp family.
The correct way to keep them is in a large (120 litres at least) tank or a pond. They can then grow to the size nature intended.
The keeping of them in small bowls or tanks leads to internal deformity. The body stops growing but internal organs dont!!!
Mikeal if you are keeping 4 in a 10 gallon tank I suggest you go to the nearest specialist fish site and ask experts or at least get a book!!
May I suggest Practical Fish-keeping!

Selective breeding over centuries has produced several color variations of goldfish, some of them far removed from the "golden" color of the originally domesticated fish.
There are colors ranging from yellow-orange to black. Black, brown, and the wild green goldfish colors are caused by different combinations of the black and yellow pigment cells. Blue goldfish occur one of two ways; they have a large amount of guanine and the absence of orange, with some black, or by the black pigmentation being further down in the skin. Red or orange goldfish occur when few or no black chromatophores are present within the fish. Silver or white fish have no pigmentation in the skin and only guanine. Albino goldfish lacks pigment everywhere. They have pink eyes.
It is not uncommon to have a beautiful black moor turn orange. Color changes in goldfish does happen! Black and white goldfish tend to change colors as well.
