Most of the degenerative diseases (what is killing Americans today) seem to be caused or aggravated by an excess of protein in the diet. (That would seem to indicate that the answer to your question is "no") However, there are 8 "essential" amino acids (proteins) which your body cannot make, and if any of these is in short supply, then your body is not able to make the building blocks it needs to to keep you healthy. (so the answer would seem to be that a good protein supplement -one that supplies the 8 essential amino acids - would be a good idea).-- Short answer- a good diet: fruits and vegetables some grains, and a minimum of junk, supplemented with a small amount of a good quality protein would probably be best for most people. Eggs are a very good source of protein, and if you eat them, supplements probably would not be necessary. Broccoli is one of the richest sources of protein known.

Protein is great to take. There are many different kinds, which vary in the length it takes to digest them. For example, whey is a fast protein, where casein takes longer (up to about 8 hours) to digest. Depending on your needs, you should find a protein thats right for you. Protein fills you up, and helps manage hunger cravings. It also helps with muscle growth. Take too much protein has harmful effects on your liver (because you would be over working it), but thats only if you are taking too much over a long period of time.

If it's a quality protein, & usually whey. Whey protein is the best; although I'm not sure why.
Generally if a guy is interested in bulking up, then protein shakes are the way to go.
They do tend to constipate, so know this before you start taking them.

Yes, if you are working out you will need about 1-1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight. If you are not working out, protein can still be taken in lieu of carbs for energy, providing a longer lasting source of energy, much like complex/whole grain carbs. Of course you will need to drink more water as you increase your protein intake, one way to tell that you have high protein in your body is when you urinate a "foam" will form in the water, indicating that your body needs more water and that it has as much protein as it needs to rebuild.
