As a woman, I doubt you want to get big muscles, so stick to less weight, more reps..like 15-20 per set, 3 sets per excercise. Do upper body one day, lower body the next, and add lots of cardio. That will give you the hard, toned look you want without looking like a female bodybuilder.

I belong to a gym, membership is about 300 for the year and I lift weights on a regular basis but I don't pay for personal training sessions. I just go and go down the line of machines and do my own workout. When I first joined the club a trainer was assigned to me to show me the machines and it was a one-time thing for free. You can do the same as I do and lots of other people do and not pay for personal training sessions but you've got access to the machines.
