The universe is made up of atoms that evolve to ever larger sizes. It is still evolving and it does it quite well all by itself.

What do you mean by "nature"? I don't think the concept of the universe "evolving" makes any sense. Evolving suggests a reaction to particular pressure to better adapt to those pressures. I think you could definitely say the universe is changing, but then entropy is part of that change, breaking down. I don't think there is any way to know whether or not it functions by itself, because we would have to be able to leave the universe to find out if there even is anything else. I'm not sure which "laws" you are referring to.

If you mean "falling apart" or "building up", the universe is falling apart. This is because the universe is expanding, yet contains a finite amount of mass and energy. So the mass and energy are spread over a larger and larger area. To do so, they have to break into smaller and smaller units, hence "falling apart" (aka "entropy" - or - "nature abhors a vacuum").
But evolve/devolve is relative. If uniformity is considered evolution, then the universe is evolving. If complexity is evolution, then we're devolving. The universe is functioning by itself to contain simpler and more widespread forms of matter and energy.

Evolving, but at some time, the universe will devolve. The universe is still a mystery, but it can't last forevor, or can it???

As long as the universe is expanding it is evolving. If you like you can think of evolution as the process through which creation unfolds. My bet is that the universe is cyclic in nature, that is, it is in an eternal cycle of expansion and contraction.

the universe is made of energy.matter is only a form of energy. energy can't be destroyed. it can only change it forms. yes, it DOES function by itself, we are ruining it. don't you see that the pollution is destroying our planet?the global warming is more obvious than ever! it is evolving of course. it's the way we appeared. it's in a permanent evolution.

It's controlled by nature's CREATIONS, not nature. We are nature's creations, yet we are destroying Earth with smoking, global warming, and littering.
