Joint research projects normally refer to projects in which two or more people collaborate in the research and writing of the project. In this case, if you found one partner who would research Starbucks while you do the small local cafe, you would agree on what information you are going to find (e.g. number of outlets, average sales, types of products sold, location of stores, number of chairs and tables at one location, etc.) then you split up and find the answers and then meet back to see where you can compare and contrast the different answers.

For instance, Starbucks has an outlet on every block in cities around the world. The small local restaurant has one location. Starbucks caters to a walk in, stand in line and visit, and either sit at one of the spartan tables or get in your car and drive away, while the small local cafe has personalized service and brings everything to your table and you eat it all there.

By doing a joint research project you can get lots more information in a shorter time.

Be aware though, that in most research projects one person will do lots of work and the other will sluff it off until the last moment. Find somebody with your energy and commitment before starting. Call each other daily and keep each other on task. Otherwise, this will be a very bad experience for both of you. Good luck.

joint research projects are usually projects worked on that involve two or more parties or companies. e.g. a fuel cell research company and an automobile manufacturer work together for a new type of battery. both have input on the project with different objectives for the outcome of the research.

A joint research project is one carried out by more than one researcher. Either individuals or companies. I would expect that your instructor wants you to team up with someone else.

i'd have thought it meant doing the project with soemone else - 2 of you researching rather than just you.
