Can anyone explain to me why this makes for such an irritating personality?

It's not a recipe for an irritating personality. Everything depends on the individual's choices in life and the things they learn along the way.
Capricorn's opposite sign is Cancer, and Cancer is emotive and nurturing, so it's Capricorn's life path to become more nurturing. Capricorn needs to learn to let go and laugh at themselves to become whole.
Virgo synthesizes at their best, but criticizes at their worst. Pisces is Virgo's opposite sign and accepting and intuitive, not so detailk oriented. Virgo must learn to be less critical, more intuitive, empathetic and accepting of themselves and others (less critical) to realize their full potention.
Gemini emotional weaknesses are being restless, unfocused and gossipy. Gemini needs to be more life Sagittarius, so emotional growth happens best when becoming more knowledgable and more.optimistic.
