I am planning a trip to Mexico, most likely to the Yucatan or Riviera Maya area. I have been researching the beaches between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Has anyone stayed in this area....what do you think is the best place to go for a relaxing vacation, that still has some nightlife and activities. Tulum looks wonderful, but may be a bit too quiet for our liking. We definately dont want as much noise and activity as Cancun offers....somewhere in between would be great! Also...my husband is a very picky eater....will he be able to get some Americanized food anywhere??? What is the best time of year to go when it isnt too crowded? Thanks

Also wondering if there are any Mercados (Mexican open air markets) in that area...especially in Playa Del Carmen???
Thanks!

Playa del Carmen sounds perfect for you! I've stayed there, and also in Cozumel and Cancun. There are plenty of places that are "Americanized" that have American food, like french fries and stuff. I know this because I am a picky eater too. Look into all-inclusives, and there is plenty to do in Playa del Carmen. The best and cheapest times to go are mostly during hurricane season. From August through early December, you should find the best prices. Don't go the end of February, or in March, or in April, that is spring break! I made that mistake once! So, January, May, and June through early December are your best bets.

There are fine hotels in Playa del Carmen and plenty of good restaurants. We stayed there about 10 years ago, in a rather simple place without air conditioning. There was a fabulous 5 star hotel nearby where we had breakfast a fw times, but I forget the name. Tulum is lovely for a day trip. You can visit the sinotes nearby, but I would not stay there.

Check out the El Dorado Royale on the Mayan Riviera! 5*+ resort with fantastic food and lots to do. The rooms are terrific and CLEAN, the staff friendly and helpful! It is a little pricey, but well worth it.
