1. Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" - Magnificent insights into the complexity, heights and depths of being human. Also so rude you cant believe it!

2. Solzhenitsyn's "Cancer Ward" - The inspiring tale of a man who comes to terms with all that life has thrown at him, within and without

3. Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" - Just for the sheer, gentle pleasure of the writing

4. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" -The finest modern saga by far, evoking a world in which we could all find our home and which, with regret, we never can

5. Sterne's "Tristram Shandy" - Wonderfully tale of the author's frustrated attempts to chronicle his life. It takes him weeks to describe his first day, so his progress recedes before him.
The first surrealist novel

PS If I might add one other:-
6. Melville's "Moby Dick" - I've tried three times but never succeeded and I know it's worth it

Hope you enjoy or have enjoyed one or more of these - If you love literature I'm sure you will

All The Best
