I need some ideas for articles in my high school's newspaper! They can be serious or funny

The thing to remember is who reads your paper. People like to see themselves in the paper. They enjoy the idea that their ideas are being heard. Especially at a High School level. Choose a handful of topics like troops in Iraq, an injured fellow student athlete, or even personal music choices, and ask individual students what they are experiencing. Odds are others are going through the same thing, and it lets people get a different perspective of the world.

Congrats on being in Journalism. I started out with my high school paper and now I've been employed with "real world" journalism for 2 years. It's great fun, isn't it?

In high school, we had a lot of fun features. Some of our best, most popular ideas were on the students. Like someone else already said, your readers like being in the paper. Quotes are key. Do more interviews than you need--anyone who was interviewed will be excited to see the paper, even if their quotes weren't in there.

Try some of these:

* Foreign Exchange Students (it helps them make friends, too.)
* New students (same reason)
* "A Day In The Life" of whoever (The nerd, jock, cheerleader...)
* Tests (standardized: Why students AND teachers hate them)
* How one of the more popular teachers were in high school (dig out old yearbook photos, and get lots of quotes from the teacher. Ask who in their classes they were most like.)
* Do A Fashion Review -- you can even take the journalism class to Goodwill or another thrift shop, dress up in ridiculous outfits and make a bogus story from that.
* Feature the teenage mother who's still trying to finish school (every school has one, I'm pretty sure, but try to keep it positive. She gets enough crap as it is.)
* Do a shopping review of stores in the area that are having great sales
* Discuss the most and least popular cafeteria lunches
* Ask why kids are taking the classes that they're taking (are there trends?)
* Go into the community and interview different career fields. Feature them, with quotes from kids in your school who want to pursue those careers
* Feature volunteer organizations and the kids that volunteer with them.

Your environment is an endless field of ideas and opportunities to write. You just have to look at everyday things and ask yourself--"How can I make this interesting? Why would anyone care about this?"

Good luck in your class. I hope I helped!

Talk about how cafeteria's all over the country are serving under cooked meat.
Talk about how global warming is going to affect high school students futures.
Talk about why boys at school would make hot chicks and which girls could pull off being a guy.

How about an article on celebrity relationships. You could research all the relationships that were started and ended in the last 5 years.

And compare them to celebrity relationships that HAVE lasted.

There is probably tons of quotes and comments from recently separated celebs.

How about an article praising those who provide your education teachers, administrators, and parents. Kids these days are so self absorbed.
