Or do some of you think he should have been sworn in on a holy book of another religion, or perhaps a telephone book?

Yes, it is appropriate! He should be able to swear in on the book of his choice. His religion should be respected.

Why are they making such a big deal of this. A person should be sworn in by the book he believes in be it..the Qu'ran, Holy Bible, Torah...whatever the case.

It would have more significance than them doing it on a book which they do not agree with or has different principles.

Well a telephone book of their constituency might be a nice symbol to remind the legislators who they represent. But my understanding is that when they take the oath of office, they don't use any book to swear on. It's just for the photo-ops afterward. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6581493

So whatever. We're a diverse culture. I don't know his whole story, but he seems very liberal on social issues so I wonder how much his Muslim identity will impact his politics.

Actually in his official swearing-in, which is in the House, no religious book is used (and the Constitution forbids any religious test). It is only in his own private ceremony in his office that he is using a Koran -- which is appropriate, since he is a Muslim.

i don't see how it's binding if you make a muslim swear on the christian bible. since.. he's not CHRISTIAN.

he doesn't reconize the religion in the same essence as christians do.. so if anyone swears him in on that.. then... it means absolutely nothing since he's not christian.

it's absurd... folks aren't slowing down and thinking... why would a muslim take the christian faith and any of it's elements in the same light?

he must be sworn in on his own basis.. if not.. then the whole situation is a loss.

does it matter what book he swears in on being that he's not swearing to uphold the book but the constitution...if anything he should be sworn in on the constittution itself..if anything
