i was wondering if hypnosis can help me with forgetting something that sort of puts me in emotional grief. i realize it is kind of the "easy way out" but i havent been able to function in school or work. so again... can hypnosis help me?

I doubt hypnosis will help. You might want to want to condition whatever triggers that event with something more pleasant... but it's not good to repress a memory no matter how painful it is. It's better to just deal with it. Trust me, you'll be a happier person.

Once my instructor using hypnosis made me forget the number 5 out of the numeric system, but only temporarily

It might, but I thought hypnosis is used to BRING OUT emotional things that people are trying to repress.

So, ironically, you will be trying to use hypnosis for it's OPPOSITE purpose.

It's not good to repress it. It will re-emerge as SOMETHING ELSE. Who knows what that will be.

Why don't you go find a therapist or cry with a good friend, pal?

Have to learn to deal with grief or it will overwhelm you! Hypnosis may end the symptoms but only acceptance can cure what ails you!
