Japan Invades China for gaining natural resources for their industrial machine...US responds by placing embargo of Steel and oil on Japan. Japan knew the only threat to them is the US, so they wanted to cripple the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor and blow up the Panama Canal. US would have to divide its Atlantic fleet and it cost time to move the ships, by then the Japanese would have been dug in throughout asia. That was the plan...

The Attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii, USA. It was launched by the 1st Air Fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy of the task force Carrier Striking Task Force [1] on the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941 (Hawaii time). The attack targeted the Pacific Fleet of the United States Navy and its defending Army Air Corps and Marine air squadrons, as a preemptive strike against the US Pacific Fleet and was intended to neutralize American forces in the Pacific, thus increasing Japan's chances of seizing natural resources in Southeast Asia. Pearl Harbor was the first of several military and naval installations attacked, including those on the other side of the island, and others across the Pacific.

The high government and naval high command believed that if they could cripple our Pacific fleet it would give them time to consolidate their gains in the pacific before they would have serious interference from us. With us at such a disadvantage some even hoped we would have to negotiate a settlement of the war with Japan. The entire idea became moot when they failed to destroy carriers at Pearl Harbor (none were there).
