I would go with the 2x1GB so that you have room to upgrade later. Both will perform about the same.

If you have dual channel capabilities you are better off with 4x512mb. This is because you have more pipelines for data to travel through. However....if your motherboard can handle 4gb ram and you plan on upgrading in the future you should go with 2x1gb

it is better if you use 2x1gb because of upgrade and from what i know it may even perform faster than 4x512mb. also, you should check if your motherboard can handle 4 pieces of ram. some boards only support 2 max simultaneous pieces of ram even if there are 4 available.
