An atom is one 'unit' of an element. Take gold for an example. One gold atom is a single unit of gold and nothing else. An atom is made up of the nucleus containing protons (positive charge) and neutrons (neutral). Whizzing around the nucleus in electron clouds or energy levels are electrons (negative charge).

An atom is an atom when it exists singularly. It is also only an atom if it is neutral - a non-neutral 'atom', with either a positive or negative charge is a ion. Ions exist when ionic bonding or metallic bonding take place, as the two things bonding together share electrons (ionic), or there are delocalised electrons (metallic).

So, an atom is an atom when it is
1. The smallest 'unit' of an element
2. Not joined to anything else
3. Is neutral

An atom is an atom when it is the smallest particle of an element, and doesn't share its electrons with another 'atom'. If it did, it would be a molecule. An atom will have equal number of electrons orbiting around it as the number of protons present in the nucleus.

An atom is an atom when, if it divided further, wouldn't represent the same element anymore. In that respect it is indivisible.

When a Hydrogen atom and Chlorine atom come together to form Hydrogen Chloride, a covalent chemical bond is formed.
Due to the different in the electronegativities of the two elements, the covalent bond formed is polar with the Chlorine side of the molecule "pulling" on the electron more than the Hydrogen. As a result, the Chlorine gains a partial negative charge while the Hydrogen gains a partial positive charge.

When chemical bonds are formed, energy is given off (exothermic process). Energy is absorbed when bonds are broken, but in this case we were dealing with atoms so there were not originally any bonds to break

An atom is the smallest form of an element . It was originally described as being indivisible though we now know it can be divided by nuclear fission.
The atom is made up of of a central nucleus(made up of Protons and Neutrons) with orbitting Electrons.

Being electrically neutral, the positive charges of the protons in the nucleus equals the negative charges of the electrons in the atom.

The electrically neutral Neutron is the same mass as a positive Proton. Each is 1838 times the mass of an Electron.

An element can ,of course ,have atoms of different masses i.e.Isotopes.The different mass number being accounted for by different number of neutrons -- the number of protons and electrons staying the same in all the different isotopes of the element.

Another particle that has shown up recently in the atom is the presence of Positron which is regarded as a positively charged electron.

All these make the atom an atom.

Atom is a greek word (atomon) that literally means something that cannot be cut or broken apart.
So what we call atoms actually are not atoms because they can be splitted. So far scientists believe that the quarks are "atoms".

atom is the smallest particle of an element. and when its not combined or joined with other atoms, its an atom, otherwise it forms a molecule. then it goes on.. dimolecule tri etc etc
